Wave Break Island Eastern Seagrass
Bed
This seagrass bed on the eastern side of Wave Break Island does not cover a
large area but is an excellent example of a seagrass habitat. The variety of
marine life supported here is astounding, what initially may appear as a rather
lifeless seagrass cover when snorkelling over the top is on closer inspection a
habitat of rich biodiversity.
This is one of QLD's few estuarine seagrass beds
that has relatively good visibility and a lack of bighties (stingers, crocs and
sharks).
There are more extensive seagrass beds north of Wave
Break Island but conditions generally aren't suitable for diving in those areas,
this seagrass bed then becomes a good indicator of some of the life that other
seagrass beds support.
Diving here you gain an appreciation of the important roll
played by seagrass beds as a nursery and a habitat for a
variety of marine life.
There are many cryptic critters here that require patience and persistence to
observe such as the
Seagrass Wrasse - Novaculoides macrolepidotus which
is the first recorded sighting of this species in the Moreton Bay Marine Park
area.
